An opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) party calling itself Ashanti Youth Caucus is saying the actions of two people make it difficult for the NDC to win an election.
The two were listed by members of the community as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party ( NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi, and an actress named Tracey Boakye, an NDC sympathizer whose social media rants trigger uncomfortable calm in the party.
The party, led by George Padmore and Siaka Moro, accuses the NDC Ashanti Regional leaders of allowing the NPP bigwig to have a field day in the region, in the case of Chairman Wontumi.
On the other hand, Tracey Boakye has sparked a social media ‘fire’ that is rapidly spreading to the corridors of former President John Mahama who is staging a comeback after being humiliated at the 2016 polls.
The actress is generating the illusion in her social media outburst that she has a child with Mr. Mahama. In addition, she seems to say that the then President splashed largesse on her, including a fully furnished East Legon home, Accra, luxury cars and cash.
Since then, her outburst has riled some NDC supporters who say they have worked for the party for many years without any compensation and it’s unforgivable for the actress and her ilk to only come in and enjoy their sweat.
According to the group, if the party does not take immediate steps to ‘neutralize’ Chairman Wontumi’s efforts and also resolve the actress and other NDC celebrities’ ongoing social media impasse, the NDC must forget about winning the December 7 election.
They said the party should not downplay the negative impact that the social media battle between Tracey Boakye and her opponents has on the chances of the party winning the upcoming elections.
“Take, for example, the just-ended mass registration exercise; how could we have helped the NPP to meet its three-million target; what strategy have we adopted and how we have helped Chairman Wontumi to stop us from registering our citizens,” the group said.
“The NPP, through its Ashanti Regional Chairman, has almost succeeded in dragging into the scheme of things the name of our presidential candidate and former President Mahama; now people are pointing their fingers at former President Mahama and our party leadership doesn’t want to do anything about that,” the group said.
The statement further noted, “Chairman Wontumi is a major danger to us in the region; steps need to be taken to tackle him in a square way. If we do not do this before the 7th of December, we’ll live to regret.
